The Girl Who Taught Astronauts Spanish

How Ellen Ochoa became the first Latina in space

My dream last night was about Ellen Ochoa and it made me think of you immediately.

Ellen grew up in California speaking both Spanish and English, speaking both. When she was little, people told her girls couldn't be astronauts. She didn't argue. She just kept learning.

She played classical flute so well she almost became a professional musician. But then she discovered engineering and fell in love with building things that didn't exist yet. She got really good at creating optical systems—basically teaching computers to see and recognize patterns.

NASA noticed. They invited her to train as an astronaut. Know what she did? She became an expert in the robotic arm on the space shuttle. She mastered that complex system so well that she could operate it perfectly while floating in zero gravity.

When she came back to Earth, she spent years teaching the next generation of astronauts. Just like how you teach Leo and your cousins the 67 game. Just like how you showed Wendy everything about your shark and organized where everyone would sleep.

Ellen didn't wait for permission to be the expert. She learned the complex systems, mastered them, then taught everyone else. She built her own world—literally went to space and helped build the International Space Station.

She's retired now but she changed everything. Opened doors. Proved that the girl who speaks two languages and loves building things can go anywhere.

That's the difference between knowing something and becoming it.
