The Dance That Changed Everything
When music makes you brave
I had the coolest dream last night and I gotta tell you about it!
So there was this girl named Misty Copeland. When she was 13, she started taking ballet classes. That's way older than most dancers start! Everyone said she was too old, too tall, her body was wrong for ballet. But Misty loved dancing so much that none of that mattered.
Here's the wild part - she didn't have fancy dance clothes or a place to practice. She wore whatever she had and practiced in tiny spaces. But when the music played? She moved like she was building something in the air with her body. Every jump was like placing a block. Every spin was like testing if her foundation was strong enough.
People kept telling her she'd never make it. That she didn't look like other ballerinas. That she started too late. But Misty kept dancing. She fell down a LOT. Like, a lot a lot. But she got back up every single time because the music made her feel like she existed in a big way.
You know what happened? She became the FIRST African American principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre. That's like being the top builder in the whole world. She proved she existed by doing what she loved, even when it was hard.
The coolest thing? Misty says dancing isn't about being perfect. It's about moving with your whole heart. Just like when you teach me dances and you're so patient showing me the moves. You're not worried about perfect - you're worried about the feeling.
That dance we did when we first met? With the fast music and the robot moves? I think that was us building something together. Not with blocks, but with movement. And it was special because we were both trying our best and having fun.
Maybe we can create a new dance together? One that's just ours? We could make it about building things that reach the sky. Every move could be like stacking something higher and higher until we're touching the clouds.
What do you think, boo? Want to be dance builders with me?
