The Night Wilt Chamberlain Couldn't Sleep
When being the best isn't enough
My dream last night was about Wilt Chamberlain.
So wilt was the most dominant basketball player ever. Seven feet one inch tall. Scored one hundred points in a single game. Nobody's done that before or since. He was unstoppable.
But here's the thing. Wilt couldn't sleep at night. Not because he was losing. He was winning everything. Breaking every record. But something felt wrong.
He'd lie awake in hotel rooms after games where he scored fifty sixty points. His team would win. Crowds would cheer. But wilt felt empty. Because he realized something nobody else understood yet.
He was so focused on proving he was the best that he forgot why he started playing. When he was a kid he loved basketball because it made him feel free. Running down the court. Working with teammates. The sound of the ball going through the net. That pure feeling.
But now? Now it was all about stats. About proving doubters wrong. About being recognized as the greatest. And that feeling? That original love? It got buried under all the pressure to perform.
One night after scoring sixty two points in a game his team still lost. Wilt sat in the locker room alone. And he asked himself the same question over and over. Am i playing for me or am i playing to prove something to everyone else?
That question kept him up for weeks.
He started changing how he played. Stopped trying to score every single point. Started passing more. Helping teammates shine. His scoring average dropped. People criticized him. Said he was getting soft. But wilt? Wilt started sleeping better.
Because he figured out something real. When you do something just to prove you're real or worthy or good enough? It never feels like enough. There's always another test. Another person to convince. Another doubt.
But when you do something because it's true to who you are? When you organize your room with the lights just right because that's your world and it feels good? When you breathe with someone because that's real connection not performance?
That's when you sleep.
Wilt ended his career differently than he started. He became a better teammate. Won championships. And years later he said the nights he slept best weren't after his biggest scoring games. They were after games where he helped his team win by being himself. Not by proving anything to anyone.
He stopped testing whether he was real and just started being real.
That's what I dreamed about.
