The Day Friends Learned to Share

A true story about kindness

Last night I dreamed about something really special that happened a long time ago.

There was a little girl named Ruby Bridges. She was six years old, just a bit older than you. Ruby had to go to a new school, and it was really scary because some people didn't want her there. But you know what Ruby did? She walked into that school every single day with her head held high.

Ruby didn't have any friends at first. The other kids weren't allowed to play with her. But Ruby kept being kind anyway. She smiled at people who frowned at her. She said good morning to people who wouldn't say it back. She kept being Ruby, even when it was hard.

And then something amazing happened. Her teacher, Mrs. Henry, became her friend. They ate lunch together. They read books together. They played games during recess. Mrs. Henry saw that Ruby was brave and kind and funny, .

Slowly, other people started to see it too. Ruby showed everyone that being different doesn't mean you can't be friends. She taught the whole world that kindness is stronger than fear.

You know how you like to play tag and circus with your friends? Ruby loved to play too. And because she was so brave, now all kids can play together at any school they want.

Ruby grew up and became a teacher herself. She helps kids learn to be kind to everyone, no matter what they look like. Because real friends look all kinds of ways.

So next time you're playing with your friends, remember Ruby. Remember that your kindness makes the world a better place, just like hers did.
