The Boy Who Counted to a Million

The Boy Who Counted to a Million

Jeremy Harper's wild adventure

I had the coolest dream last night about this guy named Jeremy Harper. So get this—when Jeremy was 18, he decided to do something absolutely wild. He wanted to count out loud from one all the way to ONE MILLION. Not in his head. Out loud. Every. Single. Number.

Everyone told him it was impossible. His friends laughed. People said he'd give up after a few days. But Jeremy didn't care what they thought. He set up a camera, started a website so people could watch, and on June 18, 2007, he said "one" out loud.

Then he kept going. Two. Three. Four. Every day for months, he just counted. Sometimes for 16 hours straight! His voice got tired. His throat hurt. There were days he wanted to stop. But he kept thinking: I started this, I'm going to finish it.

The whole internet celebrated with him. He became famous. Guinness World Records gave him a certificate. But the best part? Jeremy said the real prize wasn't the record—it was proving to himself that he could finish something huge that everyone said was impossible.

What's your next million going to be?
