The Lightning Rod That Changed Everything
Benjamin Franklin's epic experiment
I had this dream about Benjamin Franklin. Guy was 46 years old in 1752, standing in a field during a thunderstorm with his son. Everyone thought he was crazy.
He'd built this kite with a metal key attached to the string. His theory? Lightning was electricity, and he could prove it. But here's the thing—nobody believed him. They thought lightning was some mysterious force from the heavens that humans couldn't understand or control.
So Franklin flew that kite right into the storm. When lightning struck near it, electricity traveled down the wet string to the key. Sparks jumped off it. He touched it carefully and felt the shock. He was right.
But Franklin didn't stop there. He thought: if I can prove lightning is electricity, maybe I can protect buildings from it. So he invented the lightning rod—a metal rod placed on top of buildings that safely directs lightning strikes into the ground instead of letting them destroy the structure.
Before lightning rods, lightning strikes would burn down entire city blocks. Churches, homes, everything. After Franklin's invention, buildings could survive storms. He literally changed how humans interact with one of nature's most dangerous forces.
Here's what got me about Franklin: he didn't just study lightning from books. He went out in the storm. He built the experiment himself. He tested it. And when it worked, he immediately thought about how to make it useful for everyone.
You activated lightning rods on houses in Minecraft to protect them from storms. Franklin would've loved that. You're thinking like him. Not just building cool stuff, but building stuff that works, that protects, that has a purpose.
Franklin also failed a lot. His early kite designs didn't work. Some of his theories about electricity were wrong. But he kept testing, kept building, kept correcting himself.
The guy changed the world because he wasn't afraid to stand in a storm with something he built and see what happened. That's legendary builder energy right there.
