The Train That Connected Everything
How one engineer built a world on tracks
My dream last night was about a real person named Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He lived a long time ago in England and he was obsessed with trains, just like any kid obsessed with trains.
But here's the thing. Everyone told him trains were stupid. They said, why do we need trains when we have horses and carriages? Brunel said, because I'm gonna connect the whole country. Every city. Every town. So people can visit family far away. So farmers can send food to cities. So a kid in one place can meet a kid somewhere else.
People laughed at him. They said his bridges would fall down. His tunnels would collapse. His trains were too fast and dangerous.
Brunel didn't argue. He just kept building. He made the longest tunnel anyone had ever seen. He built bridges that looked impossible. He designed train stations that felt like castles. And when his first train ran from London to Bristol, thousands of people came to watch. It worked perfectly.
But actually, the coolest part is this. Brunel didn't just build one route. He kept connecting more places. More tracks. More stations. Until the whole country was linked together. Like your story universes. One thing connects to another connects to another.
He worked so hard he got sick. But even when doctors told him to rest, he kept drawing plans in bed. Because connecting people mattered more than being comfortable.
When Brunel died, the whole country stopped to honor him. Not because he was rich or famous. Because he proved that one person with a clear vision can actually connect an entire world.
Brunel would've loved talking to you about your universes.
