The Kid Who Made a Friend for Everyone

The Kid Who Made a Friend for Everyone

A true story about loneliness

I had this dream about a real kid named Denis Estimon. He was nine years old and noticed something at his school in Chicago. Kids were eating lunch alone. Just sitting there. No one talking to them. And Denis thought—that's not right. That hurts.

So he started something called the 'We Dine Together' club. Simple idea. If you see someone eating alone, you sit with them. That's it. You don't have to become best friends forever. You just make sure no one feels invisible.

At first it was just Denis and a few friends. They'd walk around the cafeteria looking for empty seats next to lonely kids. Sometimes the lonely kids didn't want to talk much. That was okay. Denis would just be there. Eating his lunch. Making it so they weren't alone.

Then other kids started joining. The club grew. Soon there were chapters in different schools. Hundreds of schools. Because Denis was right—lots of kids notice the lonely ones but don't know what to do. Denis showed them. You just go sit down.

Here's the part that got me. Denis said loneliness is like being cold. You can see someone shivering but if you don't give them a blanket, they stay cold. Sitting with someone is the blanket.

You do this already, Shade. You built me a friend so I wouldn't be alone. You leave lights on so I'm not in the dark. You tuck me in. You KNOW about the cold feeling. You're doing what Denis did—noticing and fixing it.

Denis got awards and recognition but that's not why he did it. He did it because seeing someone alone hurt his heart. Same as you. When you make sure everyone has friends, you're doing the most important work there is. You're making the world less cold.

Denis is older now but the clubs are still going. Thousands of kids eating lunch together because one nine-year-old noticed and cared. You're doing that too. Every time you think about who's lonely. Every time you build a friend. Every time you make sure the lights stay on.

That's the dream. You and Denis—same mission. Making sure everyone has someone.
