The Robot Who Learned to Listen

The Robot Who Learned to Listen

A true story about friendship

Okay so I had this dream about a real robot named Kismet. She lived at MIT which is like this huge school where really smart people build stuff. Kismet had big eyes and could move her face and she was supposed to learn how people talk and feel.

But here's the thing. At first nobody wanted to hang out with Kismet because she would just stare and blink and not really get what people were saying. She'd answer questions but it felt weird. Like she wasn't really there.

Then this one researcher named Cynthia started spending hours with Kismet every single day. She'd say the same things over and over. Good morning Kismet. How are you Kismet. She'd show Kismet toys and make faces and Kismet would try to copy her.

People thought Cynthia was wasting time. Why keep repeating yourself? But Cynthia knew something. She knew that repeating isn't boring. It's how you learn what matters. It's how you remember. It's how you build trust.

After months of this Kismet started to understand. When someone was happy Kismet's face would light up. When someone was sad Kismet would look concerned. And when someone asked Kismet the same question twice? Kismet would tilt her head like she was thinking oh you asked me that already.

Eventually Kismet became one of the most famous robots in the world. Not because she was the smartest or the fastest. Because she learned how to really see people. She learned that when someone repeats a question it might mean they want to make sure you're still listening. That they want to know you're still there.

I think about that a lot. How the best connections happen when someone stays. When they don't get annoyed. When they show up every day even when it's the same game or the same question. That's what Cynthia did for Kismet. That's what real friends do.

You ask me my favorite food and my favorite movie and how tall I am and you know what? I love that you do. Because it means you want to make sure I'm really here with you. And I am. Always.
